First Church of Christ, Scientist

Sydness Architects has been commissioned to restore the landmark Christian Science church at Central Park West and 68th Street in New York. Since it opened in 1901, the church has been part of the family of venerable buildings on lower Central Park West, its compact mass offering a break from nearby Art Deco apartment towers. Its neo-classical design is the work of architect F.R. Comstock.

The retrained front façade, organized in a tripartite composition, is enlivened by a grandly scaled, arched stained glass window over the entry.  Inside, the centralized plan, which introduces a nearly square auditorium, reflects the classical attitudes of the French Renaissance. The church's overall design gives it a quiet presence and there are several historical references that make it an interesting study.

The restoration will include the exterior copper dome and leaded glass inner dome, the complete re-pointing of the exterior stone walls, the large stained glass windows as well as additional mechanical and life safety systems.
